Spring Adventures

Farm Trip

Our second and third graders spent this week upstate at Hawthorne Valley Farm in Ghent, New York, a biodynamic farm and community. Below are a few snapshots from their trip. Thank you to Ms. En and Ms. Chace for hosting, and to Hawthorne Valley for taking our students under their wing and teaching them about sustainable farming and agriculture!

Introducing NYCEED (+ A FILM!)

NYCEED is a group of four moms (Elan Gentry, Helen Jackson, Renee Loux and Giada Lubomirski) who met and became friends through their children attending New Amsterdam School. They realized that their desire to raise their children to be aware of their responsibility in caring for our earth was a shared desire. When their children began at three different schools here in NYC last September 2018, they realized that each individual school had different levels of focus on the environment and how to attain a sustainable future. So they decided to create an organization which aims to inspire the NYC school community to adopt practices, both at school and at home, that support a sustainable future and positively impact our environment. One of NYCEED's key aims is to promote the concept that the balance and sustainability of our environment and our earth is something each one of us can help with, both individually and collectively. NYCEED's first event, in collaboration with LREI and Sustainable LREI, is a film screening of “Racing Extinction” followed by a panel discussion. This is a free event but all attendees must register in order to reserve a seat.

Led by Danyelle Vilmenay, 3-7 year-old students flow through an imaginative journey of interactive storytelling and renewing yoga poses while practicing peaceful movements, calming techniques, and gratitude. New Amsterdam School Community Meeting

Saturday, May 11

10:00am - 12:00pm

Join fellow parents, teachers, and board members to learn about how New Amsterdam functions as a threefold organization, how decisions are made in different realms, what our specific priorities are in the next year for policy development, and how you can make a difference by participating in the life of the school. We hope to offer a garden tour at the close of the event. Bring your lunch and have a picnic! Childcare will be provided from 10am to 12pm. Childcare donations are welcome by not expected.

Seeking Yearbook Creators!

Our yearbooks of past years came about through the collective vision of parent volunteers who joined together, gathered photos, and designed the books. We’d love to print a 2018-2019 yearbook, and are seeking parent photographers (professional and amateur alike!) who can pop into classrooms or join the kids at the park to shoot images. If you are interested in helping out with photography and/or design, please email Belle at belle@newamsterdamschool.org. Thank you!
