Advent | The Light of Animals
Week of the Animals
Moving from the week of the plant world into the week of the animal world feels like an exciting moment, and it is! Animals have both a depth of feeling life and a conscious connection to their senses not generally associated with plants. Animals can move their location in space in reaction to both their outer and inner environments, and they can have inner movement too. Sometimes we say, "I was moved by such and such." Our feelings and emotions can be affected by events in the world or in ourselves. Animals can also thoroughly enjoy a tasty treat and a brisk belly rub. Think of your cat stretched out in the sun, luxuriating in the warmth. We can feel that way too!
So this week, we can ask ourselves if we allow ourselves to be moved. Are we aware of the influence our inner and outer environments have on our emotions, and that our emotions have on us? Do we notice and take pleasure in the sensory world? In this busy holiday season, it can be easy to either overlook the influence of our emotions and become reactive or to shut down and say bah humbug. And who hasn't had the third cup of eggnog and later regretted it? Yet we can take a moment to reflect on the place our emotions have in our lives and be thankful that we can enjoy the warmth of the sun and the sweetness of the eggnog.
Have a wonderful holiday break!
INTRODUCING MS. BRIGITTE
NEW PARENT/CHILD LEAD TEACHER
Some of you may know Ms. Brigitte Choura from years past when she assisted in our early childhood classrooms. Beginning in January, Ms. Brigitte will return to New Amsterdam as our new Seedlings Lead Teacher! Brigitte completed her year-long study of “Birth to Three” at Sophia’s Hearth Waldorf Early Childhood Center in Keene, New Hampshire in 2015 and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theatre from Muhlenberg College. She joined New Amsterdam School as a Robin’s Nest assistant her first year and a parent/child assistant her second year before taking leave and having a child of her own. We are thrilled to welcome her back to teach both of our Seedlings classes beginning January 16. In her parent/child work, Brigitte strives to create a space of reverence where we as human beings can consciously come together and behold the children in their unfolding and deepening. Brigitte also attends births as a labor doula and works in the field of therapeutic arts for adults living with developmental disabilities.
